Beyond the Chatbot: How We Will Really Interact with AI

Let's face it, chatbots are everywhere. From customer service agents to creative writing partners, these text-based AIs have become a familiar part of our digital lives. They are handy, sometimes even impressive, but let's be real: typing or talking to a text box can feel clunky, like we are stuck translating our thoughts into AI-speak. Is that really the best way to work with something this powerful? We don't think so.
Why does the interface matter?
The way we interact with technology shapes how it integrates into our lives and work. When computing shifted from cryptic command lines to clickable icons, computers transformed from expert-only tools into everyday essentials. We are at a similar turning point with AI, and the way these interactions get designed will decide whether AI becomes a helpful partner or just another tool to figure out.

Voice AI: when conversation is the interface
Remember the thrill of asking a smart speaker to play a song, with no menus or typing? Now think about struggling with a car's touchscreen while driving to change music or get directions. Distracting and stressful. Many cars now have advanced voice assistants where the built-in AI handles navigation, music, climate and questions about nearby restaurants, all by talking.
When we can just talk to our tech, something shifts in the relationship. We are not learning the machine's language any more, it is learning ours. That flips the script on who is accommodating whom.
Supercharging creativity: Adobe's Project Turntable
Any 2D artist knows the struggle: you have perfected a design, but showing it from another angle is a pain. Redrawing takes time, keeping the style consistent is hard, and 3D modelling is a skill most 2D artists have not got time to learn. Project Turntable lets you spin flat vector art around with a slider, much like a 3D object, while cleverly keeping the 2D look from the new perspective, and your original shapes stay undistorted.[1]
Which matters because when the interface handles technical hurdles that would normally need specialized skills or years of experience, artists can focus on the creative vision instead of the execution.
Giving doctors and surgeons super vision
Surgeons have one of the toughest jobs: split-second decisions while tracking multiple streams of critical information during a delicate procedure. This is where augmented and virtual reality, supercharged by AI, are starting to make a real difference.
AI-powered surgical assistance (AR) Surgeons using AR headsets see 3D anatomical models derived from the patient's own scans overlaid directly on their field of view during operations, with AI keeping the overlay accurately aligned in real time.
Enhanced diagnosis An AR microscope uses AI to spot cancer cells in tissue samples as the pathologist looks through it, highlighting suspicious areas in lymph nodes or prostate tissue right in the microscope's view, with no extra screen needed.
Personalized virtual therapy (VR) AI-powered VR creates personalized rehab programs for people recovering at home after a stroke or living with Parkinson's, adjusting exercises based on how the patient is doing and making therapy feel like a game. It brings expert care to people who cannot easily reach a clinic.

What's next? Peeking into AI's interface future
Remember the scene in Avengers: Endgame where Tony Stark designs the time-travelling Mobius strip by manipulating holographic 3D models with his hands? Science fiction, sure, but it captures something real: the dream of interacting with AI as naturally as we think. We are not there yet, and exploring the possibilities helps us imagine where the UI for AI could go.
Gesture and gaze control
AI interpreting subtle hand or eye movements for intuitive control, such as manipulating 3D models or navigating data.
Adaptive environments
Physical spaces adjusting lighting and displays based on AI sensing presence and need, without direct commands.
Brain-computer interfaces
AI interpreting neural signals for direct control or communication.
Implicit input
AI that observes behaviour patterns and offers help before it is asked, like music that turns calm during focused work.
Brain-computer interfaces in particular are further along than most people assume.[5]
The rise of intuitive AI interfaces sparks exciting possibilities and tough questions. Will they make technology more inclusive, or will integration challenges limit their impact? And how do we balance the convenience against privacy? We believe AI's future lies in interfaces that let us delegate, create and explore with less friction, rather than in typing better chatbot prompts.
While these ideas may feel like science fiction today, they raise real questions about AI's deep integration into our lives, which the final piece of this series takes on directly.
